The oldest ship of this type, the Constellation class borrows heavily from 23rd-century starship technology and design aesthetics, such as the Miranda and Constitution classes. This class design was put into production after the Dominion War to replace lost ships during that time.

The Stargazer class was named in honor of the Constellation-class U.S.S.

The design is an offshoot of the Cheyenne class but sports a much narrower saucer section. The Dakota class is described as a day-to-day workhorse, taking on many types of operations for Starfleet. The Cheyenne is based on the design of the Galaxy class. One of few starship designs to feature four nacelles, Cheyenne-class starships fought during the Battle of Wolf 359.
